AMETEK Rotron offers many types of fans for the aerospace and defense industry, but one of our most popular types is the small vaneaxial fan.

What is a Small Vaneaxial Fan?

Small vaneaxial fans are compact, high-speed fans which are optimized for spot cooling applications. The impeller and stationary guide vanes are of airfoil design for maximum airflow and pressure delivery in tight or confined spaces. Typical product characteristics include:

Diameter 1” to 3”
Operational speed 5,000 RPM to 25,000 RPM
Input voltage 115/200 VAC, 400 Hz OR 28 VDC
Operational temp -54C to 85C
MTBF Over 50,000 hrs @ STC

Most units are available with lead wires, terminal blocks, and MS connectors and can be fitted with optional Fan Performance Sensors (FPS) or Low Speed Warning Devices (LSWD). These types of fans are used when reliability is crucial, and size and weight must be kept to an absolute minimum.

Small vaneaxial fans are robust products with over 1 million units fielded over the past 70 years. Critical structural components are made of the highest quality materials including aerospace grade aluminum and stainless steel. Standard configuration units are designed for pressurized area airborne applications. AMETEK Rotron has also created various configurations of this product type for operation in harsh conditions against Military and Aerospace environmental, electrical, and electromagnetic (EMI) specifications. Typical harsh duty conditions include:
  • High shock
  • High Vibration
  • Temperature/altitude variation
  • Salt Fog (naval and rescue applications)
  • Sand and Dust

How are Small Vaneaxial fans used in aerospace and defense applications?

Due to their compact design, small vaneaxial fans, ranging from 1" to 3" in diameter, are particularly well-suited for integration into small electronic packages. These fans find extensive use in:

  • Avionics components
  • Black boxes
  • System computers
  • Electro-optic systems
  • Navigation and guidance systems
  • Other critical systems where size and weight constraints are of utmost importance.

Small Vaneaxial fans aid in cooling high-performance processors, graphics cards, and imaging sensors. By facilitating the efficient dissipation of heat, these fans help maintain optimal performance and prevent potential damage caused by overheating.

Small Vaneaxial fans also find applications in defogging systems, ensuring clear visibility in aircraft cockpits and windows. These fans efficiently circulate air, removing moisture and condensation from surfaces to enhance pilot visibility and maintain safe operations.

In navigation and guidance systems, small vaneaxial fans provide reliable cooling to ensure stable and accurate operation. They help regulate temperatures contributing to overall system performance and mission success.

What types of small vaneaxial fans does Rotron offer?

AMETEK Rotron offers hundreds of small vaneaxial fans which are configured to support the spot cooling applications required by aerospace platforms. A few examples are listed below:

HIGH PERFORMANCE DC: One of our most popular models is 011856000 -- a DC Aximax 2. This fan was created through Rotron R&D in the late 90’s and has been implemented into many cooling systems since its release. This fan has both a fan performance sensor and locked rotor protection. At 28VDC, it has a free delivery of over 50 CFM and shutoff pressure around 3 inches of water. With its microcontroller electronics (MCDC), it only consumes between .75 and 1.5 Amps and can span 18V to 32VDC input power. This unit has lead wires as its electrical connection. This fan can be purchased from our online store here: Ametek Rotron Aximax

HIGH PERFORMANCE AC: Another stand-out small vaneaxial model is 026949000, a 37W AC Aximax 2 developed by Rotron R&D in the mid-80’s. The unit operates at 55 CFM free delivery and has a shutoff pressure around 2 inches of water. Although the unit spins at 21,000 RPM, it has a sound pressure level of 75.8 dBA. This fan has a terminal block as it’s electrical connections. This fan can be purchased from our online store here: Ametek Rotron Aximax

QUIET AND LOW POWER: Part number 041510000 is a 6W AC Aximax 1 that was created for sensor cooling in the commercial aircraft industry. It operates at 7.5 CFM free delivery with a shutoff pressure of 0.25 inches of water. Due to the speed and pressure, this fan is audibly quiet. This fan has lead wires as a connection, including a ground wire.
