Large Vaneaxial Fans

What is a Large Vaneaxial Fan?

With over 500,000 units fielded over the past 40 years, large vaneaxial fans are a prolific fan type within aerospace and defense markets providing essential airflow for a variety of flight critical and mission critical aerospace and defense systems.

These fans are high-power airmovers that are often used in applications where substantial flow and pressure are required. They are highly favored in aerospace and defense markets for their compact form factor, high efficiency, low weight and customization options. Large vaneaxial fans are often used to fulfill the most extreme system requirements.

How Large and Robust are these Fans?

The durability and precision of these fans make them a trusted choice for various aerospace and defense applications. Large Vaneaxial fans range in diameter from 3” to 14” (7.62 - 35.56 CM). They perform at operational speeds ranging from 2,800 to 15,800 RPM.

Critical structural components are made of the highest quality materials including aerospace-grade aluminum and stainless steel. Standard configuration units are designed for pressurized airborne applications.

AMETEK Rotron has created specialized configurations for operation in harsh conditions against Military and Aerospace environmental, electrical, and electromagnetic (EMI) specifications including RTCA/DO160, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461 and many, many others.- Typical harsh duty conditions include high shock, high vibration, temperature/altitude variation, salt fog (naval and rescue applications) sand, and dust.

How are Large Vaneaxial fans used in aerospace and defense applications?

Offering reliable high-flow and high-pressure performance, Large Vaneaxial fans find extensive use in:

  • Airborne Pod Cooling
  • Airframe Ventilation
  • Radar Array Cooling
  • Centralized Cockpit/Avionics Bay Cooling
  • Cabin Compartment Ventilation
  • Vehicle-borne smoke extraction and scavenge applications
  • A variety of other critical systems where maximizing reliability, flow and pressure is critical.

Most units are configured with MS connectors and can be fitted with optional Fan Performance Sensors (FPS) or Low Speed Warning Devices (LSWD).

Large Vaneaxial fans are commonly used in environmental controls systems, where they can be configured to fulfill multiple roles. Their longevity and reliability allow them to excel at long-term ventilation, while their characteristic high flow capability enables rapid air exchange in emergency situations.

As radar arrays increase in power and complexity, their cooling requirements grow. Large Vaneaxials provide a scalable solution, readily supplying the vast amounts of airflow required to ensure the array is properly cooled during operation.

Large Vaneaxial fans also find use in semiconductor crystal growth chambers. Their exceeding reliability and performance capability ensures ventilation reaches critical areas that rely on absolute consistency.

As scavenge blowers, Large Vaneaxial fans are used to prevent the introduction of sand and dust into sensitive locations, including electronics enclosures and engine compartments. Specially modified propellers allow the fans to continue operation when handling heavily laden air.

What types of Large Vaneaxial fans does Rotron offer?

HIGH PERFORMANCE, LOW DIAMETER DC:
One of our most popular models is PN 012102000 -- a DC Maxiax 3.56. This fan was developed by Rotron’s R&D team in the early 2000’s for high voltage power supply cooling and has been implemented widely into other systems in the following years. It is equipped with a fan performance sensor to allow for live speed monitoring. At 28VDC, the fan can supply over 200 CFM at free delivery and has a shutoff pressure of 6 inches of water. It consumes between 4 and 8 Amps and can be operated using 18V to 32VDC input power. This unit has shielded lead wires as its electrical connection. This fan can be purchased from our online store here: Ametek Rotron Maxiax

HIGH PERFORMANCE, MID-SIZE AC:
Another stand-out Large Vaneaxial model is 041585000, a 1900W AC Maxiax 5.75 designed to operate on 480 VAC, 400 Hz, 3 phase power. The unit operates at 1000 CFM free delivery and has a shutoff pressure of 16 inches of water. This fan has shielded lead wires with a liquid-tight seal to protect its internal components. More information about this fan can be found hereRotron Catalog

HIGH EFFICIENCY DC:
Part number 011694000 is a 500W DC Maxiax 8. It operates at 1100 CFM free delivery with a shutoff pressure of 6 inches of water. Owing to its high efficiency motor, this fan offers surpassing airflow and pressure capabilities without over-taxing its power supply.
